Let’s look at exactly what it means to have HEATH skin. It’s important to recognize the characteristics and root causes of the skin conditions in order for you to improve the health of your skin.
Common skin conditions for HEATH skin:
- Red or inflamed skin that may include a bumpy texture
- Rosacea – redness on cheeks, forehead, or chin that may include bumps
- Sensitive skin that reacts easily to skincare products
- Skin that flushes easily
- Skin that reacts to changes in weather or temperature
- Visible blood vessels called telangiectasia
What causes HEATH type skin?
The three main root causes of HEATH skin are:
- Microbiome disturbance
- Hormonal imbalances
Typically, external inflammation, such as redness and swelling, is a sign of internal inflammation. You can calm this inflammatory response by balancing both your microbiome (including gut and skin) and hormones.
A Holistic Approach For HEATH Skin
You are a HEATH type; therefore, calming your reactive and inflamed skin means addressing your root causes through some simple diet and lifestyle changes. Here are some tips on how to get started:
- Reduce Inflammation
Redness, swelling, and heat are all signs of external inflammation. These signs of inflammation don’t occur only on the outside, however. Most likely you have internal inflammation fueling the fire. When internal inflammation shows up on the skin like this, I call it “skinflammation.” When you learn to put out those internal flames, you’ll see the skin on your face calm down. When you also eliminate the external inflammation, you’ll see the healthy glow you deserve.
Eating an anti-inflammatory diet is key for HEATH types. A good place to start is focusing on a plant-based diet (veggies, fruit, legumes, nuts and seeds) with some anti-inflammatory types of protein such as wild salmon. - Balance Your Gut
Gut microbiome imbalance is a trigger for red, inflamed and reactive skin in HEATH types. Once you have irritated skin, that means your skin microbiome is disrupted. If you are the HEATH skin type, you need to use anti-inflammatory ingredients that nourish skin without the toxic triggers found in many skin care products. Since you may have sensitive skin, I suggest doing a patch test with all skin care products before applying them to your face. Just apply a small amount on the inside of your arm, and if you have any redness, itching or other signs of a reaction over the next 24 hours, do not use that skin care product. This toner is excellent for those with HEATH skin. The natural astringent properties are gently vasoconstricting, but it’s still nourishing, so it may decrease the appearance of redness and dilated capillaries without starving them of nourishment.
- 3 tablespoons (45 ml) aloe vera gel
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) rose water
In a small bowl, mix the aloe gel and rose water. Pat onto your face with your fingertips. Use within 3 days.
